Number and letter formation

31/3/2020

Morning Boys, Girls and Parents.

Today I would like you to practice mark making, making numbers and letters. Depending how far along you child is in their development your child can make marks, letters or numbers using their fingers, paint brushes, pencils or pens. They will enjoy all depending how messy you want the house to be today!

Ogmore Vale Primary uses a writing scheme called Nelson Hand Writing. This is the style of handwriting that we would like your child to develop. The first stages of this scheme is making patterns and shapes which then progresses onto letter shapes. Parents I've added a quick overview video for for you to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzZA5CeyMQY. Also some hand warm up activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7QJ4pdNzvo

Here is an image of how the letters should look.

Below are  some images of ways you can get creative with marking, letters and numbers at home. I've taking this from Pinterest. This is my favourite tool for thinking outside the box. Please click on the image to read the caption that I have added.
These are just a few activities that can be used both for numbers and letters. Please remember that some of your children will not be at the stage to make letters or numbers. Please let them explore and model shapes and line movements with them. Most importantly have fun!

Have a look at this lady parents. She uses something similar to what we use in our class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptFAL-eSvxU It's called Squiggle as you wiggle.

Also here are some handwriting links to YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-OdmQzIm98 Get squiggling letters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsAmz08nBV4&list=PL0k-1Rf8AubvOzq7dsxe2wzOnShQPuPu_&index=4 writing numbers. There are also some lovely apps to download in the app store.

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Happy Autism Awareness Week! Take a look at there website www.autism.org.uk  for some fantastic links and tips for parents.

Today's story is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This is to conclude our our topic 'Will you read me a story'. Please continue to enjoy story time with your children. In class we call this ERIC time, Everyone Read In Class. Your children has really enjoyed this focused time. Below I've added a QR story.
Picture
There are so many activities that you could do with your child that links to this story. Check out Pinterest, just search Goldilocks and the Three Bears and a wealth of literacy and numeracy activities will appear.  In the class the majority of tasks are learning through play and practical experiences.

Today activity:

You will need: Gather a range of different size bowls or containers, water, sand rice or pasta.

Step 1: Play with your child filling and emptying the containers. You may nee to model this language with you child at first. Use the words full and empty.

Step 2: As above, but this time use the words half full, nearly empty, nearly full. Again model these words with your child.

Step 3: Estimate how many cups of the same size will it take to fill each container?  It does't matter if your child guesses wrong. This is just a guess! Now test it getting your child to count as they fill.

It's All About Shape!

29/3/2020

Morning Boys, Girls and Parents,

Today I've added some games with shapes. Pick a game depending on the level of your child. Have fun and remember to model the correct words for the shapes. You can choose to play these games indoors or outdoors. These activities focus on the recognition of the shapes.

Game 1 : Cut out card shapes, use lids from your recycling or use pre-brought shapes and ask your child to name them. You can hide these shapes in rice, sand etc. Can your children find and name the shapes? You can start with four basic shapes e.g. square, circle, triangle, rectangle then increase when this is mastered.

Game 2: Use your local area or around your house to seek out shapes. I was surprised at house many rectangles there was in my living room!

Game 3: You can can use this task to tally how many of each shape they have found. Make this into a tally or bar chart. I have added some examples below.

Game 4; Make a shape picture. You can either stick a shape onto a pre-made picture or let your child'd imagination flow!

Below are some examples which I've taken from Pinterest of similar games and activities. There's so many to choose!

Edwards and I would carry out these activities over a week and we would revisit at a later date. So please re use and repeat. Don't try to get it done in one day!

If your child would like to turn their tally graph into a bar/bock graph. Use h J2E data to create graphs of the shapes they have found. You will find the on the Hwb homepage. Your child will need to login in using their Hwb login and password.

Just for fun I've added some Youtube links to  shape songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvYh1e93BII Shape cartoon, making pictues from shapes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O5o1k_5UKw Shapes with the NumberJacks

Please go through this class page and repeat the activities. I have tried to tier the games so they should keep you going for a while. Also the other staff have been working really hard too and have some amazing activities that your child could access. Don't go any higher than Yr 1.

Sometimes I post more than one post a day so you'll need to keep looking and scrolling!

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Talking through Cooking

28/3/2020

Everyday activities are great learning opportunities. Use the weekend to talk through your home tasks with your child.

This term we have been doing lots of cooking. With that in mind let’s cook together. You can make something simple like toast or a sandwich. Alternately, you can make something that uses more ingredients like a cake.

Step 1
Ask or tell your child what you are going to make together. Have some thinking time to discuss what ingredients/equipment will you need? You can make a list of both together. It can be pictorial or using words. You can scribe for your child.

Step 2
Talk through the method with your child E.g. Toast;
First, get two slices of bread.
Next, we will need to put the toast in the toaster making sure it is plugged in and turned on. Don’t assume your child will know to do this.
Then, when the toast has popped use a knife to spread the butter and jam/chocolate spread etc.
Last, it’s time to eat…yum, yum

Step 3
Can your children remember the sequence of events? If able, your child can record the sequence. Again, this can be pictorial or using words. You can also scribe for your child.

If your child is using sign assisted language get them to sign as much as possible. Also encourage your child to name ingredients/equipment. Model action words wherever you can. E.g. mix, stir, pour, spread, etc.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Happy cooking together!

Windy Weather.

27/3/2020

Morning Boys, Girls and Parents.
Today I thought it would be good to reuse the number cards that you made the other day and the pegs from your washing line. Don’t worry if you threw them away. You can do this activity using paper and pens or chalk. Depending on your situation this can also be done inside or outside.
You will need: Number cards to 20 (however these may look)/ chalk, pegs, washing line or string
  • Game 1: Peg the numbers 0-5,0-10, 0-20 onto a number line or draw them onto a piece of paper/floor. Please write the numbers large and clear. Tell your child it has been a very windy day and numbers have been blown away. Ask your child to put the numbers in the correct order. For some children you may need to start and model for them so they can copy. Pause and ask what number comes next? You can either peg the numbers to the line or place in a row on the floor.
  • Game 2: As above, tell your child it has been a very windy day and numbers have been blown off. Once the numbers have been put in the correct order tell your child to cover their eyes while you either hide the number or take it off the line. Can they tell you what the missing number is? You can make this game harder by removing more than one number or by making the range of your numbers larger. You can start from any number and the numbers don’t all have to be there. That would only be for the children who have a good understanding of number and number order. E.g. using 6 numbers ( 10, 5, 12, 7, 15, 18) , the correct order therefore is 5,7,10,15,18.  I’ve added onto active learn a number square tool where you can extend the range or decrease the range of numbers. With this tool you can place the spider onto the square to hide the number.
Below I’ve added some YouTube Links.
https://youtu.be/7zMPy6VgAyo Number rhymes
https://youtu.be/e0dJWfQHF8Y   Numbers to 100
https://youtu.be/L9md4L2pAVQ   Count with spider man
https://youtu.be/d8bgY1CYyaM  Number blocks, learn to count.

This link will take you to a free interactive website which Edwards and I use daily. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=number%20order

Please scroll through my class page and the other classes. There are so many lovely activities to do with your children. I hope you are all well and are enjoying it being dry. For the boys and girls that use sign to assist their language I will be doing some QR sessions ( watch this space). Please encourage your child to use their signs to communicate with you.  I would be grateful if you could leave me a comment to let me know how you are getting on or if you need any help.
