Tanni Grey Thompson is one of  Britain's most successful Paralympians. She was born in Cardiff and growing up she was determined to find out for herself what she could and could not do. After trying a range of sports Tanni realised at age 13 that Wheelchair Racing was her sport of choice and at 17 she became part of the British Wheelchair Racing Squad.

In Tanni’s first Paralympics in 1988 she won a Bronze medal in the 400m. Her total Paralympic Medal tally is 11 Gold, 4 Silvers and 1 Bronze and added to that 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze medals at World Championships. Over her career, Tanni broke 30 world records on the track. Since retiring from sport Tanni has received numerous awards in recognition of her achievements.
Over the next 2 weeks our school will be celebrating the Olympics. Each Class/Year Group has chosen a different country to investigate and explore. We have received a message of support from Baroness Tanni Grey.

What a productive week we have had.
We did some assessments to check up on our progress in reading, spelling and maths.
We combined our English and topic work by finding out everything we could about volcanoes and creatively presenting it on a double page spread.
In maths we focused on reasoning and problem solving. We learnt to logically present our work and explain our thought processes. We also let go a little on the focus being on the right answer, which was hard for some of us.

Next week is the start of our Olympic Fortnight. Every year group is concentrating on one country competing in the Tokyo Olympics and learning about/celebrating their traditions and cultures. We are excited to be learning all about Greece...what a shame we can't have a school trip!

As part of the Olympic fortnight, we will be holding our class sports day on the morning of Monday 5th July. For that day, the children have been split into 4 coloured teams (red, green, blue, yellow). They will need to wear PE kit but can wear a top of their team colour if they wish. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE NEW ESPECIALLY FOR THIS, TEAM COLOURED TOPS ARE OPTIONAL. Please ensure children bring in a water bottle on this day so that they can stay hydrated throughout the morning. They won't be able to return to class on their own for cups of water.
Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, our sports day is in our class bubble and we cannot invite spectators. I will, however, take plenty of photographs.
This week the children decided upon the events they wish to include and very maturely worked with their teams to decide who would compete in which event. We are very much looking forward to it and hope the weather stays dry for us.

Another week complete!

If these weeks keep going this quick, we'll be Year 6 in the blink of an eye.

This week in English we continued with 'Escape from Pompeii', describing the aftermath of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and empathising with the characters Tranio and Livia by hot seating and writing a diary entry in role as them.

We practised using a protractor in maths to measure acute and obtuse angles. We also learnt how to accurately draw them. Mrs Bradley was very proud of how much more confident we became at using protractors. We also learnt the vocabulary of probability, and understand that probability can be represented as a fraction. We did some probability investigations.

For topic this week, we researched Roman moasics and recreated their intricate designs, which took a lot of concentration. In our Jigsaw wellbeing lesson, we started to think about online safety and relationships. We had sensible and mature discussions, especially when talking about the age ratings of social media websites.

Fun Friday was great - we decorated biscuits and made salt dough blocks ready to decorate 'mosaic style'.

Congratulations to Riley for receiving the Inspire award for his newly found positive attitude. Keep it up!

Just a reminder that we really should be bringing a water bottle into school every day - even if you are school dinners as with the weather warming, it is more important that we stay hydrated throughout the day.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Yum! How delicious do Ariana's decorated biscuits look?

First week back...tick!

We are now into our final half term of Year 5...that's a scary thought but we have hit the ground running this week with some excellent work completed.
In English we have read Escape From Pompeii, practicing our inference skills, using interesting and ambitious vocabulary and describing settings.
Maths has been all about fractions - we recapped what we already knew, investigated equivalent fractions and calculated fractions of amounts.
We went a little off our Romans topic this week as excitingly the Euros start tonight! So we have each been allocated a country to support throughout the tournament and we spent this week researching our country using ICT and preparing a presentation to teach our friends about each of the countries participating. It's going to be a nail-biting few weeks as we follow the tournament and get to the winner on 11th July.
This week's 'Fun Friday' was hilarious as we made stress balls simply from balloons and flour. Whilst getting the technique for putting the flour into the balloon correct there were quite a few disasters - thank you to Ben for being a super duper cleaner!

This week's Inspire award was presented to Ben for having a very positive first week back in school. Well done Ben, keep it up!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

This week we had a virtual Roman Bootcamp - a first for us! A lady from Caerleon Roman Museum gave us a live presentation through Teams to give us an insight into the life of a Roman soldier. It was very interesting but it did make us a little sad that we still can't go on any school trips! Mrs Bradley was so incredibly proud of the questions we asked!

In English we have been preparing to write our biography of a fictional character - Perilus from the book we read called 'Romans on the Rampage'. We are looking forward to combining elements of our imagination with what we actually know about him from the book and our growing knowledge of life during Roman times.

In maths we have worked hard on understanding function machines, balance equations and then investigating mathematical statements.

The weather was really against us this week so we had a makeshift PE lesson in class which was actually hilarious but we definitely have our fingers crossed for an outside PE lesson next week!

We have had a great week this week - very busy and productive. We completed our instruction text - How to be a Charioteer and started a new writing journey -biographies this time. So we have looked at excellent examples, found out what needs to be included and evaluated/ranked several biographies.

In Maths we have been looking at 3D shapes and their nets as well as translating shapes horizontally and vertically - really practising our measuring skills!

Topic this week was interesting as we used different sweets as missiles and using our catapults, we found out that the lighter the missile, the further it travelled. We also used our results to learn how to calculate the mean/average. It was so tempting to eat the sweets though, but we stopped ourselves in the name of science.

We were also incredibly grateful to be the next class to be given a class set of laptops this week so we we literally have ICT at our fingertips, giving us excellent opportunities in class.

Congratulations to Jacob O for being the recipient of our Inspire Award this week for excellent enthusiasm.
Also a huge shout out to Ollie, Troy, Ethan, Riley, Jacob P and Alex for outstanding sportsmanship in PE this week and really encouraging their teammates - something we have been working very hard on so I am so proud of you for doing this.

Next week we are looking forward to a virtual Roman workshop so check back in with us next Friday to see how that went.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

We are now more than half way through this half term. We've had another busy week in Class 11.

In English, we have done lots of shared and group writing ready to write our own instruction texts.
In Maths, we have focused on length -  accurately drawing and measuring lines as well as converting units of measure.
In topic we have  continued with the Romans, looking at the Roman army and we wrote our method for the science investigation we will complete next week, testing out our chariots.
To finish off the week, we supported the NSPCC with their Number Day by creating board games for Reception/Year 1 to play. It was great fun!

Our Inspire award was shared by 2 lovely ladies this week - Alithia and Ruby who work absolutely brilliantly together. Well done girls!

We have had another busy week here in Class 11. First of all, welcome to Ruby. We hope you settle in and enjoy being part of our class.

In English we have started our instructions writing journey and are heading towards writing an instruction text entitled 'How to be a Charioteer', which will be based on our book - Romans on the Rampage. So far we have studied great examples to create a success criteria, evaluated instruction texts, practised using imperative verbs and looked in more detail how to write the introduction to an instruction text.

In Maths, we have practised multiplication and division as well as learnt about multiples, factors and prime numbers. We love having our maths lesson split into 3 parts - it gives us all more time with Mrs Bradley and Mrs Arnold.

In topic we have looked in more detail at the Roman invasion of Britain and completed some research on Julius Caesar to make a fact file. We have also thought about the armour of a Roman Soldier, its advantages and disadvantages. We had a visitor in our Jigsaw lesson and he was very pleased with our work!

Congratulations to Misha who is the recipient of our Inspire award this week as her attitude to work is superb! Well done lovely girl.

We are going to have a long relaxing weekend, enjoy the bank holiday and be raring to go again next Tuesday.

Another Busy Week - done and dusted!

In English this week we have continued to read 'Romans on the Rampage', exploring the different characters and writing from their viewpoints. We wrote a letter from Perilus to his dad, asking for permission to be a charioteer (see Ariana's letter below) and we wrote about the same event from the perspective of 3 different characters - Perilus, Croakbag and Scorcha.

In maths, we revisited 'time', reading analogue, digital and 24hour clocks as well as calculating time intervals and reading timetables.

Topic was great this week - we made catapults from everyday simple materials in readiness for science next week. We also learnt about key events during the Roman period, creating a timeline of them and when they invaded Britain.

We also finished our Eric book 'Wonder' this week. We absolutely loved this book and definitely give it a 5 star rating. We hope to take the very important message of kindness forward in our own lives.

Another busy week, done and dusted!

Week one...done!

We are excited to be learning about the Romans this term. To start us off, we looked more broadly at Italy and so made some delicious pizzas. We gathered the information we already knew and decided upon questions for our learning. We are linking our topic to our English lessons and started reading Jeremy Strong's book 'Romans on the Rampage'. We have explored the characters and relationships between them.
In maths, we have been learning about money, budgets and bank accounts - making sure we don't spend more money that we have when planning a party.
Also this week, we have embarked on our Jigsaw Journey with Jigsaw Jez and Jerry the cat. We look forward to our weekly wellbeing sessions with them.
It's been a busy week but all in all, a good first week back.
